Something to tend in a tab

Four tabs worth tending
for lazy afternoons in the clover

Keeping bees teaches patience: you check in, do a little, close the lid and let the colony get on with it. These four free-to-play picks reward the same habit. One hands you villages to settle and a role in a kingdom, one a military base to build and hold, one a hero to level through zone after zone of monsters, and one a zoo where animals need feeding and visitors need looking after. Each opens in a browser tab, and signing up at every one is free.

Travian Kingdoms key art
01 · Kingdom strategy

Travian Kingdoms

Every player picks a role at the start: a king who claims territory and leads, or a governor who builds villages and supports a crown. From there you settle new villages, keep trade routes busy and help your side hold ground across a round that lasts for months.

Strategists who like a clear job inside a bigger team.

  3. Find a kingdom or alliance early; the territory game is built around working together.

Base Attack Force key art
02 · Modern military strategy

Base Attack Force

This one swaps castles for a present-day military base. You gather resources, put up and upgrade buildings, train modern units and keep the defences tight, then lean on an alliance to press an advantage when the moment is right.

Good for
Players who prefer contemporary hardware to swords and shields.

  2. Upgrade defences before you send units far from home.
  3. Sign up with a busy alliance early; a lone base makes an easy target.

Fallen Sword key art
03 · Classic levelling RPG

Fallen Sword

A straightforward role-playing game with more depth than it first shows. You hunt monsters through zones that run from snowy peaks to volcanic plains, pick up professions such as blacksmithing and alchemy, test yourself against other players and trade through an auction house and a market for buffs.

Good for
Players who enjoy a steady level grind with real depth beneath it.

Zoo 2: Animal Park key art
04 · Zoo management

Zoo 2: Animal Park

You run a zoo one enclosure at a time: house and breed animals, keep the visitors fed and happy, and decorate the paths as the park spreads out. Care tasks and steady unlocks give it a long, gentle rhythm that fits around a busy day.

Good for
Players who like looking after animals and a park that grows slowly.

The honest meaning of free here

Signing up costs nothing at any of them, and the main game, from settling villages to raising animals, is open to everyone without paying.

Behind the scenes each studio keeps a store of premium currency, ornaments and timer skips. Plenty of keen players have never bought a thing. On a family computer, each studio’s account settings can cap spending or turn it off.

Your very first visit

Each game card has a button that takes you to the studio’s official page in a separate tab. Create your account there with an email and password, and play begins in that window shortly after.

Take the opening tutorial seriously. Each of these four explains resources, building and the people you play alongside in a set order, and skipping it usually costs more time later.

Fitting them around the day

None of the four freezes when you shut the tab. Buildings finish, heroes rest, enclosures need tending and rounds tick on, so a glance with the morning coffee and one more before bed keeps everything ticking along nicely.

Use the short visits for collecting and queuing the next task. Leave the bigger choices, such as a new village, a change of profession or a fresh enclosure, for a moment when you have time to think them through.

Guarding four separate logins

Logins are held by the studios themselves and never by Hive Hollow Club, so enter a password only on the official site of that game. Use a fresh password per game, and accept two-step sign-in whenever a studio offers it.

Genuine help-desk staff have no reason to request your password through any message, post or email. A stranger promising bonus gems for your login wants to steal the account, so ignore them.

How these four earned a spot by the hives

  • Every one runs in a normal desktop browser tab, with nothing to install before the first visit.
  • Every sign-up is free, and nothing essential hides behind a payment; the in-game stores are entirely optional.
  • Villages, bases, heroes and enclosures keep working between visits, so a quick check still moves things along.
  • All four have years of history behind them, studios still running them and plenty of other players about.

No. Registration is the only step; after that each of the four runs inside a regular desktop browser.

No. Registering and playing are free for all four, and the in-game shops sell optional extras rather than access.

No. Each title belongs to its own independent studio; the buttons here only send you to the official home of each game.

No. Four studios means four registrations, each with its own login.

Travian Kingdoms, Fallen Sword and Zoo 2: Animal Park each have an official mobile app alongside the browser version. Base Attack Force is played in the browser.

Zoo 2: Animal Park, with animals to care for and no battles. Fallen Sword suits a steady solo grind, while Travian Kingdoms and Base Attack Force reward teamwork.

Plenty. Timers keep running, buildings complete and the kingdom round carries on, so two short visits a day keep you in step.
